What Will it Mean if You Say No?

Do you say “no”? For women in business it can be particularly difficult to say no for a variety of reasons:

  • We want to be liked.
  • We feel like we should say yes.
  • It will be done better and faster if we say yes.
  • If we say no this time, there may never be a next time.

Whatever your reasons are for saying yes before thinking about the answer, I want to assure you that there is a profound power available to you when you say no.

Before you say yes, take the time to think deeply about these questions:

  • Do I understand how much work is ahead of me and clearly understand what is expected of me
  • Can I list the expectations?
  • What other commitments could interfere?
  • Is this project in line with my bold goals?
  • If I took it on, would it be for the right reasons?
  • Would the timing be right?
  • What does taking on this project mean to my everyday life?
  • How will it impact my other responsibilities and commitments?
  • Who else needs to be involved?
  • What would success look like?
  • What will suffer if I accept this task?
  • Am I the best person for this task?
  • Do I need more information before I start?

At first, I found it difficult to say no, but when I started assessing each task against the questions above, I found a sense of personal reward and satisfaction for taking on only those tasks that were in line with my overall goals. And that was essential to my overall happiness and success.

However, through my travels and discussions with women across the country, I realize that we still struggle when we say no. I created a bundle of information, strategies, and resources to help you say no and entitled it The Power of No.

“I’ve already put saying ‘no’ to use. I wish I had the power when I was younger in my career!” – Sarah Ullman

There are six steps to the power of no:

  • Commitments
  • Requester
  • Alignment
  • Energy
  • Time
  • Remove

What I have learned is agreeing to the wrong requests for your time in the form of a commitment, negatively influences the right requests and often impacts your ability to create your desired results.

Before you automatically agree to a project, request or task, take a moment to breathe and think; is this something that will enhance my career? Is it a project that only I am qualified to lead? Should I say yes, or should I say no?

If you want to get to the next step in your career and life, you have to change how and where you spend your time each day.

The proven strategies inside the Power of No Bundle will quickly help you maximize your time and align you towards your desired goals.

The next time you say yes – make sure it is for a project that you are excited about and that will help you advance your career.
