Sometimes you find a video in your Facebook feed that is worth sharing, even though it may have been captured a few years ago. Yesterday I stumbled upon a speech given by Reese Witherspoon in 2015 who speaks directly to women about their own ambition and drive. She delivered her message at the Glamour Women of the Year awards and shared her own frustrations with gender inequality in the work place.
In her speech she talks about the classic scene in a movie when tensions are high, trouble is afoot and the woman turns to the big strong male co-star and utters these words:
“What do we do now?”
Reese asks the crowd – how often, when faced with adversity, do women turn to a man for the answers rather than having the solution themselves? Almost never.
The first few minutes of the video shares her personal journey to create movies that show a strong female lead acting a story written and directed by strong women. She couldn’t find scripts like that and so she set about – against all of her friends and family concerns – to create a company that would do just that…put women in the foreground.
The last part of the speech she speaks directly to women in technology – if you can’t find the opportunities you want – make them happen.
If you have a goal – go for it.
Be ambitious – she encourages.
“Ambition is not a dirty word,” says Reese Witherspoon
Rather than turn to the man in the room for the answers – ask ourselves “what do we do now?”
If you are at a cross roads in your career, ask yourself – what is my next step? What do I want to have happen next and what will it take to achieve that goal?
I invite you to watch Reese’s entire acceptance speech (6 min) and be inspired to look inside yourself to find the answers to the question: What do we do now?
